Young drivers. The American author Ralph Waldo Emerson once commented that ‘ money often costs too much', but he might as well have been talking about car insurance. It's an unfortunate fact of life that you have to pay the highest amount for your car insurance when you're least able to afford it. Of course it's understandable: youth and inexperience mean that you're statistically more likely to have an accident, which in turn bumps up premiums. However, this doesn't make it any more palatable.

If you're aged between 17-25 years you'll be labeled a ‘young driver' for insurance purposes. On a practical note this means that it may take a little longer to find the best available deal, but shop around and you should get something suitable. If you've got limited funds there are a number of ways you can reduce your premium, but you'll have to think long and hard about whether you want to take any of these financial shortcuts:

As you can't do much about your age; the car you choose to drive the most important factor. As a rule of thumb the slower and older it is; the less insurance you will have to pay.

Think about what level of cover you want to take out. If all you can only afford a jalopy the chances are that a fully comprehensive policy won't make financial sense, especially if you consider the excess cost.

Don't cut any corners with your no-claims bonus . In the short -term a good no-claims policy may cost slightly more, but could save you a king's ransom within a few years.

If you are able to find off-street parking you'll hammer down the cost of insurance. It's also well-worth considering fitting some type of vehicle security device (such as a steering lock, an alarm or an immobilizer). For a relatively small financial outlay you'll not only make your car a tougher target for thieves, but also save on insurance.
