What is ski travel insurance?

You must make sure that you purchase adequate cover should be going skiing. Winter sports holidays can result in far worse losses and accidents than those incurred during beach holidays. Thus, to make sure that you are adequately protected you should make sure that you take out the right type of policy.

This is unlikely to come from a travel insurance policy that you have bought from an outlet on the high street, maybe as part of a package deal. The cover that you get from these sources is likely to be inadequate for what you need, and in many cases winter sports aren't covered at all.

You should always bear in mind with almost all kinds of insurance that once you have shopped around you are likely to get what you pay for. Because of the higher risks involved in skiing, they won't be included in a standard insurance policy as people takin g a beach holiday will not want to be subsidising the higher risks. So, standard policies will generally not cover après ski activities such as maybe off piste skiing, tobogganing, ice skating or snowboarding.

Some policies will include off piste skiing, but only if you do with a guide. Some policies will also cover you for weather conditions which prevent you from indulging in whatever you are going on holiday for. So, if there is too much or too little snow you can get cover for the effect of that.

Be careful also when you buy annual travel insurance, as these won't include claims for winter sports unless you specifically ask for it, and if you do get it, it may not be sufficient for your needs.

Thus, the best advice if you are going skiing is to buy ski travel insurance from specialist in ski insurance. This needs to include £1m at least for your medical bills (at least £2m for the US, where medical costs can be extortionate), at least another £1m for personal liability, in case you crash into someone an injure them. You also need to be able to cover the full cost of an air ambulance back to the UK should you need it.

Specialist ski insurance should also cover you from the theft of skis from luggage racks. When you are halfway up a slope, you may not be able to lock up your skis whilst drinking your gluhwein, and you need specialist cover for them in case they are stolen.

You might be better advised to put your ski equipment, if it is very expensive, under the all risks section of your home contents insurance policy. This may have a higher limit for single items and may give you new for old replacements.
