What is single trip travel insurance?

If you don't travel for business, and in general take only one or maybe two holidays each year, then single trip travel insurance is probably the better value travel insurance for you. This is most usually taken up by those on their annual holiday or just on a one-off trip.

The idea is that single trip travel insurance should offer you all of the cover you should need from a policy. This includes medical insurance cover, possessions and baggage cover, cancellation and curtailment cover. Should you have individual needs, and thus need extra protection, or you need to only have cut-down cover, you should tell the insurance company, as they should be able to tailor the policy to fit your needs closely.

On purchasing single trip travel insurance you must ensure that you check the maximum break length on the policy. If your trip is over 90 days, it is very unlikely you will be able to get cover on a regular single trip travel insurance policy. Thus, you need to loon at backpacking insurance or long stay travel insurance. Under this and you should be able to get travel insurance - although some companies set a 30 day limit.

So, we've pointed out that it is possible to be over insured and under insured on your travel insurance policy, but what exactly do we mean by the two terms when it comes to travel insurance?

Well, you can be over insured if you are paying to be covered for risks that you aren't actually taking. There's a reason for instance why a regular single trip travel insurance policy doesn't usually automatically include skiing or winter sports insurance, and its because those who aren't going skiing shouldn't have to subsidise the extra risk that skiers take. If you buy a single trip travel insurance which has cover for winter sports when you are only going on a beach holiday then you are paying for something you don't need.

Keeping the skiing theme going. If you are partaking in winter sports, you need to make sure that you are fully covered by your insurance policy. What can happen is that you buy insurance for skiing, but it doesn't cover all the risks involved. For instance, it may have cover for your medical expenses, and may reimburse you if you lose your ski pass. But does it cover you for personal liability? What happens if you crash into someone, injure them badly and are then sued for it. You must check you have enough cover for that - because crash into someone bad enough, or recklessly enough, and that someone is earning a lot of money, and you could need over £1m of cover.
