Where can I get a travel insurance quote?

The travel insurance market has opened up massively recently. From being only able to obtain it from a few major insurers, you can get a quote for travel insurance from almost anywhere. But it should be pointed out that travel insurance is not quite the same as home insurance or car insurance. If you look at adverts for it, you will see that some companies will simply say that they have a price for a single trip to Europe, a price for a single trip to USA, a price for annual travel insurance. It is not done as scientifically as for car insurance or home insurance, with different answers for different questions putting your insurance up or down by a few pounds. There are "bands" of insurance quotes which means that you will have one price covering a wide variety of people for single trip travel insurance and then maybe people over 50 will get another price, people doing skiing or hazardous sports will get another price, however, there aren't so many differences between prices.

So, where can you get a travel insurance quote from? Well, for a start, you can go to traditional insurers. The same people from whom you get car and home insurance will also give you a quote for travel insurance. You can get these over the phone and you can also get these on the internet. Normally, you will have to fill in a quote form - where you have to say where you are going to, how many of you are going, and how long you are going for.

When you put where you are going, you won't normally have to put the actual company, it will normally be divided into the UK, Europe, rest of the world excluding USA and Canada, and rest of the world including USA and Canada (USA and Canada are separated due to the extortionate nature of medical bills which can be incurred). You will normally be asked to separate out the people going into children, adults and those over about 50 years of age, as they are in separate insurance bands. Then you may be asked if you are intending to take part in any dangerous sports - which make the chances of you needing medical treatment and the comprehensiveness of medical cover required much higher.

You can also get quotes from some specialist travel insurance covers - some of whom only provide travel insurance, and some who specialise in a particular kind, such as dangerous sports. Supermarkets and banks have also got in on the act, offering travel insurance as part of their product mix.
