Under what circumstances may you not be able to get Travel Insurance?

Insurance, remember, is aimed at covering you for events which may happen that are not under your control. You are hedging against the risk involved that that event could happen and the financial discomfort the event could bring. Insurers reserve the right not to insure you should they decide that it is probable that that "insurable event" will occur. Otherwise, the premium they charge will have to be extremely high. In general though, insurers are risk averse.

When you take out any insurance, you have to give detailed and accurate information about yourself. This is important, as should an insurable event occur to you, you may need to prove that you didn't know it would happen when you took out your insurance in order to be able to claim. With travel insurance there are some particular issues, which may raise your premiums or maybe result on insurance providers not being able to cover you. This particularly refers to medical conditions. You should tell your travel insurer if you or anyone on whose health the trip depends on:

- Are aware at the time you are taking out insurance of any reason the trip may be curtailed or even cancelled, or if you are aware of a medical condition that could result in a claim.
- Are at the moment waiting for the result of an investigation or tests relating to an existing medical condition.
- Are undertaking the trip even though a medical practitioner has advised you against it
- Are undertaking the trip specifically to get medical treatment.
- Have suffered from a recurring or chronic illness in the last 12 months preceding the start of the insurance.
- Are on the waiting list, are receiving, or are recovering from in-patient treatment at a nursing home or a hospital
- Have been diagnosed with a terminal illness

It's important to understand that if any of the above are true, you will not necessarily be denied insurance. What will happen is that the travel insurance provider will need to assess the risks that insuring your trip provide, and make a judgement on the premium that you should pay or whether you should be insured at all. It all depends on how old you are, what the medical condition or treatment is, and where you are travelling.

There could be circumstances where you may not receive insurance, but what would be worse is if you take out a policy, paying the premiums, and undertake travel thinking you have cover, then an insurable event occurs and you can't claim. This could turn a mere accident into a calamity, as you won't be covered for it and may not be able to pay for treatment. You may not get it……
