There are many different distribution channels for insurance. Remember, ultimately you are not buying a tangible product, you are essentially buying a promise to deliver a service or money should something happen (an insurable event). Therefore, you need to get certain information, so that you can judge which is the best policy for you, and then compare policies and then buy. Distribution channels for this could be a face to face meeting with an insurance broker or agent, or over the phone information from a broker or a direct insurer, or through a travel agent, or over the internet.

Should you buy face-to-face from an insurance broker, your cost of sale is higher to them, as your policy sale includes the cost of the office they have and their time in meeting you. Should you buy over the phone, you have to pay for the wages of the call centre people and the running costs of the centre. Should you buy from a travel agent, you are paying for their costs and the commission that they charge the insurance provider. However, if you buy direct from the internet, then the variable costs of providing that policy are much lower, as the interface is between you and the website, and you can have information which you can re-read on there, and you can fill in forms and even pay online, so it doesn't take people's time. Thus, online holiday insurance should be cheaper as the company can still make a margin as they have lower costs per policy sold.

You should be able to find all of the normal holiday insurance options. You should be able to get annual multi-trip policies, and you should be able to get cover for backpackers, you should also be able to ask for a quote on family and group policies as well. You should be able to modify the level of cover available, such as cover for baggage and money or to put the excess up or down.

You should be able to see policy documents only, and there should be a facility to print them out as cover confirmation. You should also be able to apply online, paying by credit card, and the online holiday insurance provider may give you the option of having details emailed or posted to you.
