Can I get specialist Golf travel insurance?

Well, here's an interesting thing - you thought that you needed specialist insurance for only hazardous activities where the chances of you getting injured were higher. But travel insurance is about insuring you against all the risks possible, and you may not realise that golf can actually be extremely risky. Can't get your head around that? Well, let us explain.

Firstly, most regular travel insurance policies do not cover golf equipment. If this comes as a surprise, look at your home contents policy. It is very unlikely also to cover your golf equipment. The reason for this is that you take your golf equipment all over the place, and frequently walk away from them (think about what happens on the golf course). They could be stolen at almost anytime, from your hotel room or on the golf course, and with many full sets of clubs costing up to £1000, its something that insurance companies are not happy laying out for, as the risks are not very controllable.

So you need to make sure if you are taking your golf clubs with you that you insure yourself with specialist golfing travel insurance. Not only will they cover you monetarily for the loss or stealing of your golf clubs, but if they are a specialist golf travel insurance company they will know how to arrange that you get a replacement set of golf clubs sent out to wherever you are in order for your golfing holiday not to be ruined. They should be able to replace the clubs exactly (so you get the same set - although obviously they are likely to be newer). A regular travel insurer would be unlikely to do that. Our advice if you are going on a golfing holiday is to get the best insurance possible.

Perhaps the biggest problem when you are on a golfing holiday is related to personal liability. Remember that at the end of your fingertips is a deadly weapon, capable of propelling an even more deadly piece of ammunition at a three figure mile per hour. The golf ball can damage a lot of things. Even if you are one of the best amateur golfers, you may still hit the ball into the rough, or maybe into a car park.

If you hit a car, you can be liable for damage to it. If you hit a property, you could be liable for damage for that. Worst of all, if you hit a person, you could be liable for that. Depending on the damage you do - without insurance you can be faced with a bill for anything from the low three figures up to over a £1m if it's a person you hit and they have a tenacious lawyer. You must get cover.
