What Exclusions are there on Travel Insurance?

All of the UK travel insurance policies will have different restrictions and exclusions. Regular, bog-standard travel insurance policies will probably exclude dangerous sports participation. Also, even those travel insurance companies which did offer cover for extreme sports would put restrictions and regulations on them - so if you are going away for a climbing holiday you may be excluded from climbing over a particular height.

The majority of insurers do actually have some exclusions common to them. These factors could cause you difficulties in getting travel insurance, and may even stop you getting it altogether. Should you find you are having difficulties in finding insurance you should speak directly to an insurer.

Should you or any of the people you are trying to insure are not residents in the UK, that could be a cause for exclusion. Also, if you or anyone you are trying to insure have recently suffered from a recurrent, serious or terminal illness, you may have problems. This is also the case if you or anyone else you are trying to insure have been refused travel insurance or ever had some restrictive terms imposed on you.

Insurance is a product that covers events that you can't control or don't know will happen in the future. So, if you suspect for any reason that your trip or holiday might be terminated earlier than might be expected for any particular reason, and you try and claim for cancellation, and the insurer can prove that you knew when you took out the insurance that it may be cancelled, then you will not be able to claim.

You will also be excluded from claiming if you had bought insurance for a personal trip which is found to have been actually a business trip.

Your premiums may be higher if you, or a member of your party is above a certain set age limit. This is different for different companies. Some will be up to 70 or 75, but it could be as low as 65. You could also be excluded if you or a member of your insured party is in the later period of pregnancy.

Should you not have cover for hazardous or dangerous pursuits, then if you are injured performing them you will not receive payment. Even if you do have cover, you still need to have followed safety recommendations in terms of procedure, clothing or equipment. Should you leave property unattended and it is lost or stolen then it may not be covered. You must also report loss or theft to the police. Finally, you will not receive payments to cover any self-inflicted injury or any illness that results from AIDS, or alcohol or drug abuse.
