What are the exclusions on travel medical insurance?

Most travel insurance companies claim that they will cover over 80% of the people who ask for travel insurance with no quibbling and no extra premiums. For most of us, who have had no recent medical problems, getting travel insurance is not difficult. But those people who are currently on medication, or are pregnant, or have been diagnosed with a medical condition recently, may face some problems.

When you take out travel insurance, you should expect to be asked some questions about your medical condition before you will be able to take out a policy. It is very important that you answer these questions honestly. The reason is that it is far better for you to have to pay extra on your premiums or maybe even not go on holiday at all whilst you can't get travel insurance than if you go on holiday and fall ill or have an accident which requires costly treatment for which you are not covered. Now, you may think you have cover, because you got cheap travel insurance having lied to the insurers. But if they find out that you got insurance on false grounds, then they will not reimburse you for the costs of your treatment, any rescue costs, and repatriation. It's much better to tell the truth.

In almost every circumstance, there should be at least one insure who will give you travel medical insurance. There are specialist insurers set up for older people, pregnant women, people with different illnesses etc. They will hopefully provide insurance for you at competitive prices, but you should expect to pay more for it.

Regular travel insurance policies, however, tend to make quite a few exclusions on their travel medical insurance. The reason for this is that insurance is to cover events that are not likely to happen. If there is a higher risk of that event occurring, then they will either have to charge much higher premiums or not offer travel medical insurance at all. That way, they are able to keep premiums down for everyone, as they are not asking their customers to cover people more likely to need to claim.

This is not just about you though - it is also relevant to anyone in your party. The reason for this is that if you are travelling with other people, and they fall ill, then you might need to cancel or curtail your holiday (depending on when it is they fall ill). So you should also inform your insurer about the medical condition of people you are specifically travelling with.
