Where can get the cheapest travel insurance?

Well, let's set the scene here - you're a typical nuclear family of four and you've decided to travel for a week's holiday in Corfu. You just want the cheapest possible basic cover for if any of your family got hurt or ill, or any of them were involved in an incident where someone else (a third party) for injured or ill, or if something got stolen from them.

To make the policy even more basic, none of your family will be undertaking any activities not normally covered by standard policies, such as bungee jumping or scuba diving. Also, there is nothing in your family's personal baggage that might require special cover, for instance valuable jewellery or a laptop. Finally, all of your family are free from illnesses requiring medication or some form of medical attention.

The first place you might go would be at the travel agent at which you buy your holiday. It is sometimes quite tempting to buy your travel insurance from them at the same time, in fact 66% of us do exactly that. As well as high street agents, there are a multitude of independent travel agents, and these may be able to offer a more competitive policy. You might also be provided with some kind of consultation or claims service should you book at a travel agent.

The likes of Tesco, the post office and even Boots the chemist have taken advantage of their brand power buy allowing you to shop for travel insurance at the same time as you buy your shampoo or groceries. You may be able to buy these at the store or also on their website.

Since the average British family has been found to take around four holidays a year, be it weekend break or full fortnight, they can save money by purchasing an annual insurance policy. This covers you for many trips in a year, and varies according to your needs. Should you take more than 2 trips per year, an annual travel insurance policy could be the cheapest per trip option out of all of them.

Then there is the Foreign office. The Foreign office have been concerned for a while that many of us go on holiday before they receive adequate cover. Go to the foreign office website, navigate to their travel section, and you should see which cover you should be taking out and will also point you towards companies that will sell adequate policies to you.

You must check the details of the cover you are buying before you undertake travel. Furthermore, you should allow yourself enough time to have your policy issued before you embark on your travel, or you won't be covered for cancellation.
