Pets are often great friends to older people, and the chance not to have to worry about how much the vet will cost if anything happens is worth taking if it’s possible. Saga pet insurance, like Saga’s other products, is designed with people over 50 in mind – indeed, you can’t buy anything from Saga unless you are this age.

There are two levels of cover with Saga pet insurance – Essential and Super. Both policies will allow year on year claims for vet’s bills up to a certain limit - ₤1,000 in the case of Essential and ₤5,000 for Super. And under the latter ₤1,000 of that ₤5,000 can be for complementary medicine. Most eventualities are provided for under both Essential and Super cover, the only difference being how much money you can claim. The exception to that is third party liability (say – heaven forbid – your dog bites someone and they sue) which is the same sum for both. You have to pay ₤100 excess, but after that the cover is up to ₤2,000,000. What is a bit surprising though, considering the average age of Saga patrons, is that you would have to spend a whole 96 hours in hospital before the insurance would start to pay for kennel or cattery charges.

But the golden rule with buying insurance is to do as much research as you can before deciding on a policy. There are a great deal of pet insurers out there now, so look at various quotes and types of cover before you commit. And make sure you read any policy through carefully before you buy it.
