Lloyds TSB Pet Insurance: Compare

Curiosity fortunately doesn’t always kill the cat, but it might result in a trip to the vet… particularly when you’ve managed to end up in the washing machine. That soggy moggy – who escaped with shock and made a full recovery – was one of the pets whose medical treatment was paid for by Lloyds TSB pet insurance. Others include a puppy who had to be treated for cuts after wedging his head in a baby gate, and a bigger dog who needed surgery to remove two golf balls he had swallowed (both, again, made a full recovery).

Lloyds TSB pet insurance is, the bank claims, among the most competitive in this fast-growing market. It includes cover for up to ₤3000 worth of vet’s bills, emergency kennelling if you have to go to hospital, up to ₤1000 for advertising and rewards if your pet goes missing, ₤500 on the death of a pet and even compensation for having to cancel or curtail a holiday if your pet needs a life-saving operation.

On the down side Lloyds pet insurance, like most pet policies, won’t cater for animals over a certain age – 11 for cats and 9 for dogs. It’s understandable from a finance point of view that insurers are reluctant to cover elderly animals. But seeing as a good proportion of dogs and cats do achieve a more venerable age (I knew a cat who reached 22) and are more likely to need care the older they get, it’s pretty inconvenient if you’re a pet owner. Some insurers will go higher than Lloyd’s upper limit but some stop lower – as always with insurance, it’s worth shopping around and asking as many questions as you can. As always with insurance, do as much research and quote comparing as you can before you commit to a policy.
