Motorbike Insurance Quotes UK

Many years ago, things came to a head in the motor insurance industry. A group of consumers found that the mainstream insurers were making quotes for insurance for motorbikes without enough consideration for the type of bike they were being asked to quote on. Mainstream insurers were eventually persuaded to add to the list of bands into which they grouped bikes and bikers to make insurance fair.

There are two main forms of motorbike insurance that you can be quoted for. The first is rider-specific, where you as a rider are insured to ride any kind of bike. The cost of this insurance will depend on your age and experience and skill as a rider. Some motorbike insurers will enable you to build up no claims discounts on your premiums, and for this form of insurance your ability to get these discounts will depend on the amount you yourself claim as a rider.

The other sort of insurance is bike-specific insurance. This insures the actual machine, and the cost is dependent on the type of machine. Should it be an old bike with not a lot of value, then the insurance premiums will be cheaper, although sometimes you would have to name the riders who will use the bike to really help the insurer value the insurance. Your no claims insurance would then depend on the bike itself not being stolen or involved in an accident.

Something else that used to trouble consumers of motorbike insurance was that the risk of their motorbike being stolen didn't depend on the make of bike, more on its value. But this is not fair, because as consumers pointed out - race replicas and Harley-Davidsons were more likely to be stolen than Moto Guzzis, which are more used for commuting than racing around, but are more difficult to sell if stolen.

What has changed the motorbike insurance industry has been the onset of the internet - which has allowed smaller motorbike insurance companies to get into the act and make the industry more competitive and force insurers to review their policies so that they are offering cover that is tailored more to bikers needs and of more value. Premiums need to be charged depending on the group rating of the bike, the age and experience of the owner and the postal district where the bike is kept.

Nine years ago, the vast increase in the theft rate and personal injury claims drove many insurers away from the market, and caused many companies to be nervous of taking on any more business. This limited the number of quotes you could get, which is not necessarily the case now. The industry is more competitive, and you can gain by shopping around for quotes.
