Does everyone need insurance for mobile phones?

If you are thinking about insurance for your mobile phone a combination of two factors can help you determine whether or not you might need it:

the type of phone you use
your personality and lifestyle

For example:

If you have a....	Then
Pay as you go or prepaid phone	The risk of someone running up a huge phone bill if they steal your phone is significantly reduced by the capped credit you have on it. You don't have to continue paying a monthly contract fee to a phone company if your phone is lost or stolen.
Contract mobile phone	There is a high risk you could be liable for a large fraudulent phone bill if your phone is lost or stolen. You are tied to paying monthly contract payments to the phone company even if it is lost or stolen, having to pay these and buy a replacement phone and/or contract could be very costly.

Likewise:

If you....	Then
Regularly lose or damage things	Mobile insurance could save you the cost of repeatedly having to replace your mobile phone.
Have a busy lifestyle, travel frequently and/or rely on your mobile for work or business	The risk of losing your mobile and it's contents including contacts and media are potentially higher and therefore perhaps worth insuring against.

What would the impact be if you lost your phone & it's contents? Would it be an inconvenience or could you suffer significant financial loss?

You need to weigh up the risks as they apply to you when deciding whether mobile insurance is a good idea. Think carefully about the what the likelihood is of something happening to your phone....

If you are prone to losing or damaging things or have an enthusiastic dog who has a taste for mobile phones, then mobile insurance could be a good investment, regardless of the type of phone you have.

However, if you feel your personality and/or lifestyle keeps the risks of anything happening to your phone very low, beware of being seduced into paying for something you might not need.
