Did you know that people in Britain will ask for twice as many house insurance quotes when they are looking for cover as for when they are looking for other services? A recent survey by Abbey National found that people in Britain may ask for over 5 quotes when they buy insurance, but seem to be happy with far less choice with services such as electricians, plumbers and solicitors.

This is sometimes amazing, considering the difference between prices that you may be able to obtain. Whilst around 40% of respondents to the survey will want over 5 quotes for insurance, 61% of people only ask for two quotes for decorators, the respective proportion for estate agents is 56%, electricians is 52% and plumbers is 51%. Of those who use a solicitor, over half only asked for one quote.

So, why do people feel the need to get so many quotes for insurance when they seem not to be bothered about the number they get for solicitors, whose services can cost in the thousands? The reason is most likely to be related to the competitiveness of the industry, and also there is the onset of the internet, which makes it a lot easier to get quotes.

The ability to get quotes on the internet means that in one sitting, at your own convenience, you can get access to almost the entire market of insurers. If you get a quote from a decorator, they have to come to your house, and they may not be able to do that at a convenient time to you. Solicitors may even charge you even to simply give you a quote! The problems that require a plumber to fix often need to be done in an emergency, which doesn't give you the time to get many quotes. Getting an insurance quote, though, is normally free and increasingly easier.

So, how many home insurance quotes should you get? Well, it depends on your needs. If you are a low risk customer, you are simply looking for the cheapest quote, and you have many quotes as well, since everyone will probably want you as a customer. So, if your home is in a good area, which is relatively crime-free, with no threat from flooding and subsidence, and you have good security measures in your home, then you'll find less difference between the quotes you get, and you should easily find insurance quotes online.

However, if you are a high risk customer, you may not get a quote from everyone that you ask, and the quotes you get could be wide apart in terms of cost.

In general, the more you shop around, the higher chances you are of getting a cheap quote that suits your needs.
