House Contents Insurance UK

House contents insurance is a must. The crime figures that are published regularly are showing a worrying amount of burglaries happening, and it doesn't matter what type of property it is or in what area it is located. Whilst you're reading this, there are hundreds of burglaries taking place around the country, and thus hundreds of house insurance claim forms being filled in.

What's worse is that it is only when the claims form is filled in that many consumers find that they have in fact been woefully underinsured, and thus will only be able to claim for a small percentage of the costs that are involved in replacing the possessions that were removed from their home.

Some people will spend a long time slavishly searching for the right amount of contents insurance for their property, and then hide the documentation away for the year. During that year, they may treat themselves to a new home cinema system, with DVD, surround sound and all the mod cons. Maybe you have bought a nice work of art. However, have you remembered to update your contents insurance policy with these items?

What happens if your new possessions take the value of the property within your home above the sum that you are insured? What happens an item exceeds the maximum limit for an individual item? Do you think the home insurance companies are going to take pity on you and give you the money anyway? If you do, then let us provide you with a free journey back from La-la land. They won't, and you could end up seriously out of pocket unless you regularly add up how much your new additions cost.

So, after you have read this, do yourself a favour, get a piece of paper and a pen, and go carefully around your home, from room to room. Don't miss out your garages, sheds, greenhouses etc. Write down every single item of any value to you in those rooms, and then work out how much it would cost to replace those items. It may even be worth bringing in an expert to value some of your antiques or art pieces. Anyway, once this is done, add up the total value.

Now compare this total value to the cover you have on your contents insurance policy. If it is higher, get on the phone to your home insurance company and get your cover increased. Keep any valuations and receipts in a safe place, to use as evidence of ownership should you need to claim.

Finally, read your policy, and find out what exclusions there are that could invalidate your claim. A few minutes here could save you thousands of pounds.
