Health Care Insurance, How to Apply

When applying for health care insurance, in addition to questions about your current health, you will be expected to provide details of your:

  • medical history (for full medical underwritten policies)
  • age
    • Always provide honest, accurate and complete information!
  • gender
  • residence
  • occupation

This information is required for everyone being insured under the policy.

All these factors are considered by the insurer and will determine whether you are offered a policy or not. The application process for health insurance is the same regardless of who you are getting it through:

Application process What happens
Provide information to the insurer You will be given a form to fill in or given a number to talk to an underwriter over the phone.
Information is assessed/clarified The insurer may come back to you with questions and/or may contact your GP for further information. This can take several days or weeks depending on the type of policy and cover.
Application is accepted or declined If accepted the insurer provides a price quotation and the policy details including any exclusions, terms and conditions. If you are declined you may need to look for alternative types of health cover with another insurer.

If your application is approved you will be issued with a health insurance registration certificate (for full medical underwritten policies) listing all the policy exclusions and your insurance policy documents. Under the agreements between the Government and the ABI, all insurers must be clear about their private medical insurance, explaining in detail:

  • When your cover starts and ends
  • What is and isn't covered
  • Any limit amounts on policy benefits

Insurers have different claims procedures, know what these are before you accept a policy. Most insurers have 24 hour helplines with trained staff available to assist, so put these contact details in a handy place in case any health issues or questions about your policy arise.

Keep your health insurance certificate and policy details in a safe place usually with your other personal insurance documents. If your financial or personal circumstances change always let your health insurer know, to make sure your policy will still be valid in the event of a claim.
