Since 1918 Barclays has been one of the UK 's leading banks. Global expansion followed, as did diversification into stocks and shares. Nowadays Barclays offers an impressive range of financial products and services. High profile advertising and a large customer base have ensured that Barclaycard remains one of the most popular credit card choices around. Whether 'popularity' equates to 'value for money' is debatable and the boss of Barclays even admitted to the House of Commons that there were better deals around.

Barclays offers a number of different varieties of Barclaycard : Click on their website and you'll find a built in card selector which allows you to input your requirements and receive a recommendation. Currently their most competitive card is the Platinum card which has a low APR and balance transfer rate. In fact, if you spend more than £50 a month the rate remains at 0% until paid off, which could work out a good deal for some. Some of the other cards have a higher APR, for example the Graduate card; which offers a free bottle of champagne in exchange for a higher interest rate.

Another example of a card that promises much but doesn't necessarily deliver is the Barclays Premiership card. This is definitely for fanatical football fans. It offers applicants the chance to win tickets to top matches, discounts on sports products and interest-free spending on season tickets. However, it comes with one of the highest APR's around - so it is worth reading the small print. On the upside Barclaycard bundle together a package of services and 'extras' that many will find attractive.

Each card includes: free online management, an extended warranty on all purchased goods and a promise to refund the difference if you buy something on Barclaycard and find it cheaper elsewhere. International rescue and travel insurance services are also available to all cardholders. Barclaycard has recently teamed up with Nectar , which means that spending on your card allows you to build up points that can be redeemed in shops for a variety of products. Barclaycard also has a unique credit card protection scheme to cover you against theft (for a nominal annual charge).
