Contents Insurance Cover

Go round your home and look at your property. What would you take with you if you were to move home tomorrow? Your furniture, your kitchen equipment, your computer, your hi-fi, TV. What about clothing, jewellery? Maybe you value the frozen food in your freezer. What happens if any of this got stolen or damaged? Could you afford to replace them? If not, then why not cover your risks with contents insurance?

Losses could be down to you being careless, but also through burglary. Maybe there is a fire in your home, which could devastate your property. Or you could be flooded, which could damage your property in numerous ways.

That's not all though. Water can escape from pipes and tanks, your heating systems could leak oil. A storm could blow a tree through your window or maybe an aerial. Subsidence could cause the property to slip, which could have any number of consequences. Earthquakes have hit the UK this year as well, and if you live near an airport, do not ignore the possibility of your property being hit by an aircraft.

You yourself could trip over and damage mirrors, or glass tabletops, or you could pour coffee on your hi-fi or computer. What happens if you have children, and their curiosity gets the better of them and bang, crash goes an expensive vase? Accidental damage to anything in your home can be covered, and you shouldn't ignore the possibility of this happening.

What happens if someone visits your home, falls over your property, and injures him or herself? The rise of no-win-no-fee lawyers means that you could find yourself being sued for something like this, and for a considerable amount. Most contents insurance policies provide liability insurance to cover you against this.

Most contents insurance policies cover expensive items like jewellery, antiques or art, but many will insist on them being covered separately, as there is often a limit on what a policy will pay out for a single item. Your contents insurance policy should allow you to name these items and whilst you may have to pay a higher premium for them to be included, it should still be worth it.

Musical instruments can be covered by your general insurance, but bear in mind that they are unlikely to cover them outside your home, which is unrealistic, as you are likely to take a musical instrument out of your home on numerous occasions. You would be well advised to go to a specialist insurer for this.

Your policy will cover you either for a specified amount or for an added up value of the contents of your home. This can be agreed with your insurer.
