Cheap Home Insurance in the UK

When you are being considered for a home insurance policy, many factors come into play. The insurance company will lower your premiums if they feel that you impose a lower risk.

You should bear in mind that the more information you give a company, the more chance you have of lowering your premiums, so you should not be shy to come forward and tell them about any factors which you think should make you a lower risk candidate. You can then ask for a discount or just a lower cost premium. If not, ask them what factors would make them give you a lower premium, they should be happy to help you, as less risk for you is less risk for them, so everyone wins.

Here are some tips to help you get a cheaper home insurance quote.

· Have you taken measures to make your property more burglar-resistant? Insurers will lower your premiums if you can meet a certain designated level of security. You should ask your insurer about the effect that smoke alarms, mortice deadlocks and burglar alarms have on your premiums. It's not just what products you have, but the brand is important too. Ask your insurer what are their approved brands before you make your security adjustments.
· Your local neighbourhood watch scheme should be joined if it exists, or set up if it doesn't. Insurance companies look very fondly upon these schemes.
· Don't confuse the rebuilding cost of your home, which is what you should be insuring it for, with the market value of your home, which is higher. Insure your home for the correct amount.
· See if there are no-claims bonuses for home insurance. This gives you a discount for a claim-free history.
· Offer to pay more excess. This is the amount of a claim that you pay yourself. You can save a large amount this way.
· Sometimes, taking out different policies, such as car and life insurance in addition to your home insurance, will afford you loyalty benefits, with cheaper premiums for all policies
· There are ways to get discounts, such as if you are over 50, or if you are maybe a member of a trade union. If you shop around you may be surprised at the level of discounts you can get to suit your situation.
· If you extend your contents insurance to cover your valuables when away from home then you can maybe save money on your travel insurance.
· Make sure that you review your policy details annually. You insurer needs to know if you have parted with valuable possessions that had been insured under your contents policy so that they can hopefully lower your premiums.
