Where to get cheap home insurance rates

The arrival of more providers of home insurance providers every year has been to the benefit of the consumer, of that, there is no doubt. It's not just insurers who are getting in on the act, supermarkets for one have added home insurance to their product mix. The home insurance market is thus becoming more competitive with each passing year.

And you, the consumer, should take advantage of this rise in competition. As long as you know where to look, and how to look, then it's not difficult to find cheap home insurance.

Whatever you do, do not be lazy. You can call around for cover on your property and your contents and save hundreds of pounds every year. In fact, the more companies you speak to, the better your chances are of getting the cheapest rates.

Some people see an ad on the TV or in a newspaper, go to that one company, and get a quote from them. Whilst you can give that one company plenty of details, you are still hoping for the best when it comes to getting the cheapest rate. You may actually get it, but if you do, it'll be down to luck, and no other reason. That said, if you ended up saddled with the highest rate on the market, you'd have suffered from terribly bad luck as well. But this is your money, so why are you leaving it to luck anyway?

So the next logical step might be to speak to a few insurance companies, asking for quotes, then comparing each company's rates in order to find the cheapest one. But if you do that, whilst you will get a fuller view of the market, you may not find the cheapest rate, as it will be left to luck again.

General Insurance Brokers are your next port of call. The advantage of these is that they will take a lot of the work out of your hands. They will search the full market themselves in an attempt to offer you the best quote you can. Another advantage of this is that you give your details once, and the quotes will be like-for-like. The brokers will want you to buy from them, so it is in their interests to find you the cheapest quote. They know that there are other insurance brokers out there, so they should work in your favour.

Most consumers don't actually need a broker; they can use the internet instead and do it themselves. Go to most personal finance sites or insurance broker sites, fill in a generic form and you can even apply online for the policy that you choose. This should be cheaper, as you are saving the insurance company admin costs.
