Classic car insurance UK - online insurance

Classic car insurance in the UK:

Anyone who's tried to get their classic car insured will know that cheap car insurance policies are harder to find than a clutch plate for a 1932 Aston Martin. If you follow the traditional routes you'll quickly find yourself in an expensive financial cul-de-sac. However, by spending a little time on the web you should be able to find quality cover which doesn't break the bank.

Owning a classic car is a labour of love, and naturally enthusiasts are keen to make sure that nothing happens to their vehicle. As a result classic car drivers are among the safest road users in the UK , which begs the question of why they have to pay such hefty premiums. The truth is that, if you're prepared to shop around, you won't have to.

Over the past few years a number of online insurance providers have sprung up who specialise in classic cars at much more competitive rates than you'll find on the high street. Classic cars are insured for a fixed sum (unlike modern cars; where each year the vehicle depreciates in value), which must be agreed upon by both owner and insurance provider. As no two classic cars are the same (even if they are the same model, manufactured in the same year) this usually involves a visit from a professional valuer.

Specialist insurance providers understand that the majority of classic cars owners have a second, more-modern, vehicle which they use on a day-to-day basis to get from A to B. In insurer's eyes low mileage means lower premiums and you could make considerable savings by keeping the mileage down (look out for restricted mileage clauses). You can knock more money of the overall premium by parking your vehicle off the road (ideally in a garage) and fitting a security device.

Before you take out a policy make sure that it provides cover for everything that you might use your car for, such as track events, attending rallies and club functions.

When taking out insurance on a classic car it's well-worth considering including breakdown cover. After all ‘they don't make them like they did in the old days', these days they are much more reliable!
