Time was that supermarkets were – well, supermarkets. Now they’re banks, internet service providers, travel agents and motor insurers. In fact that list was all just Tesco, which is such a huge presence in the economy that in 2004 an eighth of all the money spent by British shoppers went on its products. Tesco is not the only supermarket chain that has branched into insurance – Asda, Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer are also in on the act – but it’s easily the biggest.

The sheer size of the company must give it punch and manoeuverability in the field, adding weight to its claim to ‘competitive’ premiums. But there is a potential flip side to being big, as illustrated by the Guardian newspaper’s 2002 awarding to the company of a consumer ‘Oscar’ for ‘Tardiest Service’ based on a reader’s report of an eight-month wait for a particular car insurance claim to be settled.

And then there’s a more philosophical consideration which might apply to all supermarket giants of how big is too big… are enormous multi-tasking shops a good thing? It depends on your point of view.
