A recent poll revealed that the majority of British schoolchildren associate the name Churchill not with the brandy-loving hero of World War II but with a nodding dog. Bad for the state of the nation’s youth, good for the insurance company. Churchill (the company not the man) was established as a rival to Direct Line, emulating the latter’s novel approach to car insurance. But now the two companies are stablemates: Churchill was bought in 2003 by Direct Line’s owners, Royal Bank of Scotland.

You can get cover straight away through the Churchill site subject to ‘normal terms and conditions’. As with all rapid insurers, the most important thing will be whether your insurance history and needs are straightforward. If you are low risk, it should be a simple process, but if there is any reason you might have difficulty getting insurance – for example if you’re a young male driver, have a fast sports car or a driving conviction – you may need to call them up to talk about it directly. In fact at the time of writing the site’s customer service pages are unavailable: if this is still the case when you visit at the Churchill site you may have to make verbal contact with them whether you fit into a high risk category or not. The site itself is, like all reliable online financial sites, protected by security encryption. Claims are made over the phone. Once a claim is reported, Churchill promises ‘the support you need’ including details of the nearest car repairer.
