Adverts for Admiral, like Diamond, can seemingly be spotted in every tube carriage on the London Underground: on your way to work while you’re thinking about whether you’re going to be late or not the posters of a man in an admiral’s costume leap out at you, if not like a familiar friend, at least like an acquaintance whom you don’t exactly dislike. There’s another association. Like its fellow insurance company elephant.co.uk, Diamond is in fact part of the Admiral group, which, since its founding by a Canadian called Henry Engelhardt in 1993, has grown and grown.

Admiral Car Insurance: caters to higher risk drivers

Admiral itself has nearly a million customers, and caters particularly but not exclusively for higher risk cases, such as young drivers, city dwellers and sports car owners. Its site offers the chance to get a rough quote before you proceed through the full quote application process, and the official version is valid for 42 days. The site also draws attention to the fact that any information entered on it will be available to call operators if you decide to speak to someone directly, so you (theoretically) won’t need to repeat yourself.

Insurance quotes are made according to a number of variables. The most obvious are your gender, age and the kind of car you drive. But less obvious factors may also come into consideration, such as where your car is kept and, perhaps more surprisingly, your marital status. Admiral is among the companies which uses a sliding scale from married (lower premiums) through cohabiting to single (higher premiums).
