Why you might need breakdown insurance

If you breakdown on holiday in the middle of nowhere, without breakdown insurance you could find the cost of your holiday doubling!

There are several very good reasons to have breakdown insurance, it not only pays for costs such as call out and towing charges which can range from £60 to £100 for a garage call-out to £150 and upwards for the Highways Agency to tow you from a motorway, it also protects your safety.

Breaking down can also put you and your vehicle in a dangerous situation especially if you are stranded on a motorway or blocking a busy road. Having breakdown insurance means you can leave everything to trained professionals who have the right skills and equipment to not only repair or tow your vehicle but keep you and your vehicle safe.

Apart from covering the costs of an unexpected breakdown while using your vehicle day to day, there are some specific situations where breakdown insurance can be invaluable, for example:

If you.... You should know that....
Tow trailers or caravans Call-out and towing charges increase significantly for larger vehicles, however standard breakdown insurance usually covers the cost of recovering a caravan or trailer up to 3.5 tonnes when the vehicle towing them breaks down. BUT if the caravan or trailer itself breaks down the cost of attending and repairing these may not be covered by standard breakdown insurance so check with your insurer.
Drive abroad If you’re driving in Europe breakdown insurance is a must. Dealing with a breakdown and arranging assistance in another country can be problematic, especially if you don't speak the language or know the area. Cover should include vehicle recovery, a replacement vehicle and repatriation of the vehicle, as it could cost a lot to send it home.
Use a motorcycle Bikers have different needs to other vehicle users and having breakdown insurance which responds to you quickly can prevent you from being left in the elements waiting for help. You need specialist motorcycle repairers who have access to flat bed lorries to tow your motorcycle.
Own a classic car It's well worth considering breakdown insurance as the chances of an older car breaking down are much higher than a modern vehicle. Breakdown insurance for a classic car can also give you the option of being taken to a specialist garage or car restorer.

Breakdown insurance is often offered as an optional extra when purchasing motor insurance, buying it as part of a larger motor insurance package can be more cost effective. However, you may decide you want to purchase it separately for certain situations and vehicles as outlined above, either way it pays to get as much breakdown insurance cover as you can afford!
