European Breakdown Insurance Cover: essential in Europe

In the UK the only kind of insurance we are obliged by law to buy is third party car insurance. Lots of people have a breakdown add-on but it’s not essential. If you’re driving in Europe however, it’s a must. It’s easy to forget when you’re in a familiar place where everybody speaks the same language as you quite how disorientating even being in another country, let alone having to deal with a problem, can be. European breakdown cover should include vehicle recovery and a replacement car if yours is going to be out of action for a while. It’s also important that it covers the possible repatriation of the vehicle, because if your car is not going anywhere for the rest of the holiday it could otherwise cost a lot to send it home.

Avoid using European Breakdown Cover by not breaking down!

The best thing, of course, is to avoid having to use your European breakdown insurance cover by making sure it doesn’t break down in the first place. Make sure the car is fully serviced and if you’re driving somewhere cold remember the antifreeze. Take a good map and plan your route carefully so that if you do break down, you’re not in the middle of nowhere. And if your car is prone to mischief, consider leaving it at home and hiring one instead. If you do that, make sure that the hire company is covered for breakdowns too – any respectable one will be. Many companies offer European breakdown cover. You can read about the major ones on this site. And there are lots of other sources of information about breakdown cover and other kinds of insurance, for example the Association of British Insurers at www.abi.org.uk.
